No 53 Christmas 2023 Special Set

"Timeless" is probably one of the most overused expressions in marketing, but when you wear a stunning looking fossil around your neck that roamed the world as an oceanic ambush predator 350 million years ago, I guess “timeless” is the only word one can use.

The mere thought of wearing something (to be exact an Orthoceras – a relative of today’s cuttlefish) that has been around for so long on this planet- it gives me goosebumps.  It looks like an artefact from the Museum of Contemporary Art – with its sleek elongated shape and little grey chambers visible, yet it has been around since the Triassic.  Such a stunning central piece needs nothing else to shine, so I kept it really simple with black on black Onyx, Lava, Tourmaline & Agates contrasted by cool silver-plated pieces. Some of the silver comes from silver beads & findings, but some beads are hand-gilded silver.  Using the same technique the painter Gustav Klimt used to create his unbelievable gold effects on his paintings, I used silver leaf to gild meek black lava beads. Now each of these beads looks like a small globe with unknown silver continents….

Look carefully and you will see a vintage Arabic Prayer bead that has been exquisitely inlaid in meticulous detail, a quality of work hard to find in today’s day and age. The refined quality of these beads belies the long journey they have traveled through the back alleys and markets of North Africa. Prayer beads such as these embody the intersection artistic expression and faithful devotion that are a cornerstone of the Islamic world.
